MD and MD/MPH Insurance

MD and MD/MPH students enrolled full-time are required to obtain adequate health insurance.

Student Health Insurance Plan

Review complete information about the Student Health Insurance Plan offered by UnitedHealthcare Student Resources in the brochure. The annual premium for the health insurance plan offered through the Student Health Service is automatically added to the student's CaneLink account.

Waiving the University-Sponsored Plan

Students with adequate healthcare coverage of their own may request to waive the University-sponsored insurance. However, students with limited out-of-area coverage or otherwise inadequate coverage are urged to carefully review their options before requesting to waive this plan. Health insurance waivers must be submitted each academic year.

Waiver Deadlines

  • MS2-4 and MS2-4 MD/MPH: July 15
  • MS1 and MS1 MD/MPH: August 15

Submitting a Waiver

Students must submit a waiver request via the UnitedHealthcare student portal. To submit your waiver, please have your student ID (starting with a 5) and current insurance card ready. Students will need to access their UM email for verification to submit your waiver.

Students will receive a waiver approval or denial based on their insurance coverage from Aetna Student Health within 5 business days of their submission.

Reinstating the University-Sponsored Plan

Students who previously waived the Student Health Insurance Plan for the fall semester can reinstate it prior to the spring semester by completing the Medical Student Reinstatement Request Form and Checklist prior to January 25.

Similarly, students can reinstate the University-sponsored plan within 30 days of terminating other similar coverage by completing the Medical Student Reinstatement Request Form and Checklist. Documentation of termination may be requested.

Coverage can be reinitiated at the start of the fall semester simply by choosing not to waive the plan for that year.

Please do not consider your reinstatement complete until reinstatement has been verified via CaneLink, the charge has been posted to your student account, and all charges on your account have been paid.
